What are the tourist destinations near Srinagar

Srinagar is summer capital of Jammu & Kashmir. Where as Jammu is winter capital. The territory comes under union territory of Government of India. Some are the attractive places are as below.

1. Dal Lake

About 15.5 KM around, Dal Lake is city of Srinagar’s jewel. A vast sheet of beautiful lake reflecting the carved wooden balconies of the houseboats, shikhara (gondola – like water taxi boats) and the misty peaks of the Pir Panjal mountains.

Dal is a lake in Srinagar (Dal Lake is a misnomer as Dal in Kashmiri means lake). The summer capital of Jammu and Kashmir. The lake is also an important source for commercial operations in fishing and water plant harvesting.

Scenic views of the lake can be witnessed from the shore line of Mughal gardens. Such as Shalimar Bagh and Nishat Bagh. Which was built during the reign of Mughal Emperor Jahangir and from houseboats cruising along the lake in the colorful shikaras.

During summer season, the Mughal were having peaceful and memorable time spent at Dal Lake and its beautiful garden to avoid heat waves in Delhi. During the winter season, the temperature sometimes reaches −11 °C (12 °F), freezing the lake.


It is recommended to stay in Houseboat during March to October. You must feel the unique staying experience with evening boat riding. Its give you peace of mind and soul.

During winter you must avoid Houseboat because its frozen lake. And due to extreme cold the shikhara service is very limit to before 6 PM. Best hotel during winter will be Royal Comfort Regency, Srinagar, with all amenities.

Best time to visit Dal Lake is during March to June. Not recommended to visit during winter due to frozen lake and less Shikara service.

2. Pehalgam

Pehalgam Located 95 km from Srinagar at a height of 7200 ft. Pahalgam, known as the ‘Valley of Shepherds’. It is a famous hill station in Jammu & Kashmir where many films have been shot.

A place that has a special and exciting quality. Standing at the confluence of Lidder river and the Sheshnag lake, Pahalgam is surrounded by thickly wooded pine forests. Breathtaking vistas of meadows and the snow-clad Himalayan mountains. In Pehalgam, best place to visit in Betaab Valley and never miss it.

The town also holds an amazing two-day long Snow Festival that showcases winter sports like skiing, snow-sledging and many more which tourists can participate in. Other activities that tourists can indulge in are golf, trekking and angling.

Apart from being a pilgrimage site, Pahalgam is also a treat for adventure junkies and is the starting point for several treks. However, the highlight of the activities available for tourists is the white water rafting facility winding down the Lidder River through the forests and down the rapids.

While shopping in Pahalgam, remember that there are only three banks with ATM machines (SBI, HDFC and J&K) and hawkers will ask for five times the rate of the product, so don’t forget to bargain. However, the Kashmiri shawls, carpets and clothing with chain-stitch embroidery are beautiful and a must buy.


Pahalgam has luxury, budget and mid-range hotels. However, the JKTDC huts offer the best views of the region. The huts also provide ponies for transportation, though they have been restricted from entry into the premises, they wait at the gate.

However, during the months of March-November most hotels are booked on account of pleasant weather. During Amarnath Yatra almost all budget hotels remain booked.


While most restaurants serve vegetarian food during the Amarnath yatra, the market area is filled with restaurants that serve delicious Mughlai delicacies during the rest of the year. All the hotels in Pahalgam have in-house restaurants that serve Indian and Continental cuisines but the fast food joints on the streets still serve the best meal.


The best time to visit Pahalgam is March to November. Winter season also have unique view, but depends on weather.

Sonmarg had historical significance and was a gateway on ancient Silk Road. Connecting Kashmir with Tibet. Sonmarg, which means ‘meadow of gold’ has, as its backdrop, due to snowy mountains against a cerulean sky.

In late April when Sonmarg is open for road transport, thats why visitors can have access to snow which is furnished all over like a white carpet. Ponies can be hired for the trip up to Thajiwas glacier a major attraction during the summer months.

In the winter, Sonamarg becomes a valley covered in white gold thereby living up to its name. Covered with alpine trees from all sides, Sonmarg has few of the most loveliest flower collection in its way.

Zero point is basically a snow covered point on the way to Zojila Pass from Sonmarg. Sledding and snow biking are the main activities.

Sonamarg is an absolute delight to watch where one feels that he has come to a silver snow in paradise. A God’s natural gift to the earthy mankind in India, it is a must visit on the iternary. It is 81 Km from Srinagar.


Best time to visit Sonmarg is during summer March to June.

Budget for Kashmir Tourism

It is always recommended to visit Kashmir with big group of people more than 5 people and above. The more big group the less it will cost your pocket. With 5 people in group, accommodation and travel for 5 night 6 days in Kashmir, minimum it will cost Rs. 15,000/Person, price reduce because of group size. That is approximately $200/Person. Budget may vary as per standard of accommodation and mode of travel, due to season wise.

How to Reach Srinagar 


17 Kms from Sheikh Ul Alam International Airport Srinagar, India

Can be reached from metro cities of India like Mumbai, Kolkata, New Delhi, Chennai etc.

BY TRAIN (Not recommended as of now)

14 Kms from Srinagar Railway Station, India. (From Banihal to Baramulla only)

Note: No direct train available from any metro cities of India as of now. Work in progress to connect all India.


From Jammu Tawi to Srinagar roadways are there with private cabs and buses from Jammu Tawi. Dal Lake is just 5 Kms from Lalchowk Srinagar.
