Cappadocia’s Cave Hotels on a Budget

In Must Do Experiences by Zain1 Comment

Most people who visit Cappadocia come to cross Hot Air Ballooning off of their bucket list – and to do so with the most breath taking backdrop.  During the Winter time the rough weather and frigid temperatures convince many to stay away.  The area sees a significant drop in tourism, which you can take advantage of.  There are many cave hotels in Cappadocia, the best being the Kayakapi Premium Caves. The hotel ranked 25th in the CNN’s listing of top hotels in the World – the only hotel in Turkey to make the list.  During the Winter the whole region has specials rates to attract business and because of the low occupancy you will often be one of only a few customers to occupy the hotel which can result in upgrades.

Cappadocia is a region made of many limestone caves which housed residents up to the 1960’s.  Many of these caves have been developed into world class hotels.  The Kayakapi Premium Caves are located in the Goreme National Park and are a UNESCO World Heritage Site.  The hotel is occupies what was once a neighborhood which was evacuated in 1969.  Each room was a house and you can see the name of the owner of each of the houses outside the gate.  The suites have their own Hamam/Turkish Spa, a living room, a day bed, and a bedroom with a king bed.  In the hallway leading to our bedroom we had two windows which overlooked the dimly lit network of tunnels which connected the caves when they were previously occupied.

During the Winter hot air balloon trips sometimes will get cancelled if the winds are too high to have a safe flight.  So if you are planning to travel here, plan a day or two extra to see the region in case your trip gets cancelled.  Because of the extra risk and lower business you will often find discounted rates on the balloon ride.  The snow capped caves and limestone formations certainly make up for the extra risk.
